Data center construction and expansion is predicted to continue steadily over the next ten years worldwide. With the increasing focus on reliability and efficiency, the initial design is more important than ever. Thus, today’s data center designer is required to have knowledge of mechanical, electrical and telecommunications systems and how they interact—areas not typically found in the same reference manual or standard.

Until now.

BICSI 002, updated in 2011, sets forth requirements, recommendations and additional information that should be considered when working with critical systems, like the electrical, mechanical, and telecommunication networks, as well as other significant needs, such as site selection, security, and building needs.

To accomplish the delivery of these diverse subjects within a single volume, BICSI 002 integrated the key concepts and requirements from other documents and standards, from ISO, IEC, TIA, ASHRAE, NFPA and others, while providing reference to specific documents where more considerations or information is available. This feature, unique to BICSI 002, provides a comprehensive document, which is applicable world-wide, with the risk of differences between documents minimized.

Data center owners and operators; telecommunications and information technology (IT) consultants, project managers, and installers; professionals within facilities and physical security management; and A&E and construction firms involved with data centers will find benefit in purchasing BICSI 002.

As data centers continue to evolve, so too will this standard. Already in discussion are the expanding of facility availability and international information, and the addition of "green" technology and data center efficiency beyond PUE/DCiE.
